Switch, Backup Lamp: Description

Vehicles with an electronic automatic transmission have a Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) that is used to perform several functions, including that of the backup lamp switch. The TRS may be a separate component, or it may be an integral part of an electronic automatic transmission solenoid pack or of a transmission gear selector module. The specific TRS details vary by the model of the transmission installed in the vehicle. The TRS is described in further detail elsewhere in this service information. Refer to the service and diagnostic information for the automatic transmission type installed in the vehicle.

The manual transmission back-up lamp plunger style switch is connected to a 3 inch wire pigtail connector that clips to the side of the transmission case. The switch itself screws into the right hand side of the transmission case. It activates from the offset lever which interacts within an area of the shift rails. When going into the reverse gate, the plunger depresses which turns on the reverse lamps.
