Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.WARNING:
When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.NOTE:
It is important not to disconnect the Battery or clear any information from the PCM at this point. Any stored in field data collected will be used during the scan tool test in the next test step.
Is the DTC active or pending?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- PERFORM THE VVL SCAN TOOL DIAGNOSTICS
- With the scan tool, navigate to Systems Tests, perform the VVL System Diagnostic test and follow the on screen directions.NOTE:

VVL Solenoid failure:
- Go To 3
Rocker Arm failure:
- Inspect the Rocker Arms and Camshaft Lobes for the cylinder or bank called out by the scan tool and repair as necessary. Valvetrain issues can include an improperly installed Rocker Arm, improper clearance (lash) between the Camshaft Lobe and Rocker Arm, worn Rocker Arm, broken or sticking Rocker Arm lock pin, or faulty hydraulic lifter.NOTE:
The easiest way to inspect the Rocker Arms is to push on the black slider in the middle of the arm. if it pushes down easily, that's the stuck-low Rocker Arm.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- With the scan tool, navigate to Systems Tests, perform the VVL System Diagnostic test and follow the on screen directions.
- CHECK THE ACTUAL OIL PRESSURE TO THE VVL SOLENOID IN THE CYLINDER HEAD
- Turn the ignition off.
- Remove the appropriate VVL Solenoid called out by the scan tool.
- Install the (special tool #2027300090, Kit, VVL Adapters) in place of the VVL Solenoid.
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.
- With the scan tool, monitor the Dual Oil Pump mode.NOTE:
Let the engine run long enough for the pump to switch to low pump mode.
- Read and record the oil pressure reading on the oil pressure gauge. Compare the reading to the main engine oil pressure reading from the Engine Oil Pressure Sensor reading on the scan tool.NOTE:
The Cylinder Head oil pressure should be within 5.0 psi of main engine oil pressure reading.
Is the Cylinder Head oil pressure should be within 5.0 psi of main engine oil pressure?
Yes
- Remove and inspect the screen on the VVL Solenoid for debris that can block oil flow through the solenoid. If no debris is found, replace the VVL Solenoid in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Diagnose and repair the lack of oil pressure to the VVL Solenoid.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
