Diagnostic Test

  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    1. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
      WARNING:

      When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    2. With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.
      NOTE:

      It is important not to disconnect the Battery or clear any information from the PCM at this point. Any stored in field data collected will be used during the scan tool test in the next test step.

      Is the DTC active or pending?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

  2. PERFORM THE VVL SCAN TOOL DIAGNOSTICS 
    1. With the scan tool, navigate to Systems Tests, perform the VVL System Diagnostic test and follow the on screen directions.
      NOTE:

      See the Theory of Operation for an explanation of in field and scan tool diagnostics.

      Scan tool results?

      VVL Solenoid failure: 

      • Replace the appropriate VVL Solenoid in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      Rocker Arm failure: 

      • Inspect the Rocker Arms and Camshaft Lobes for the cylinder or bank called out by the scan tool and repair as necessary. Valvetrain issues can include a worn High Lift (center) Camshaft Lobe, improperly installed Rocker Arm, improper clearance (lash) between the Camshaft Lobe and Rocker Arm, worn High Lift Rocker Arm follower, broken or sticking Rocker Arm lock pin, or faulty hydraulic lifter.
        NOTE:

        The easiest way to inspect the Rocker Arms is to push on the black slider in the middle of the arm. if it pushes down easily, that's the stuck-low Rocker Arm.

      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
