Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs and record on the repair order.
- Record the Environmental Data.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST .
- Probing of the circuit cavities at the ORC Module body harness connectors or vehicle connectors is only to be done with a approved test lead from the test lead 10159-6 or the use of Breakout Box 8443-55 to prevent vehicle wiring harness connector damage during diagnostic procedures.
- CHECK THE (R13, R15) LEFT SIDE IMPACT SENSOR B SIGNAL AND GROUND CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Disconnect the Left Side Impact Sensor B harness connector.
- Disconnect the ORC harness connector.
- If the vehicle is equipped with the standard key ignition, follow this ignition on warning.WARNING:
Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- If the vehicle is equipped with the keyless ignition, follow this ignition on warning.WARNING:
Disconnect the 12-volt battery wait two minutes before proceeding, remove the ORC fuses, connect the 12-volt battery, wait two minutes before proceeding. Cycle the ignition to the On position, then reconnect the ORC fuses. Wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Measure the voltage of the (R13) Left Side Impact Sensor B Signal circuit and (R15) Sensor Ground circuit at the Left Side Impact Sensor B harness connector and ground.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Repair the (R13, R15) Left Side Impact Sensor B circuits for a short to voltage.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- CHECK THE (R13) LEFT SIDE IMPACT SENSOR B SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WARNING:
To avoid serious or fatal injury, turn ignition on, then reconnect the battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Measure the resistance of the (R13) Left Side Impact Sensor B Signal circuit between the Left Side Impact Sensor B connector and ground.
Is the resistance below 100K Ohms?
Yes
- Repair the (R13) Left Side Impact Sensor B Signal circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- Measure the resistance of the (R13) Left Side Impact Sensor B Signal circuit between the Left Side Impact Sensor B connector and ground.
- CHECK THE (R13, R15) LEFT SIDE IMPACT SENSOR B CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER
- Measure the resistance between the (R13) Left Side Impact Sensor B Signal and (R15) Sensor Ground circuits at the Left Side Impact Sensor B harness connector.
Is the resistance below 100K Ohms?
Yes
- Repair the (R13, R15) Left Side Impact Sensor B circuits shorted together.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- Measure the resistance between the (R13) Left Side Impact Sensor B Signal and (R15) Sensor Ground circuits at the Left Side Impact Sensor B harness connector.
- CHECK THE (R15) LEFT SIDE IMPACT SENSOR B GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Disconnect the ORC module and the ORC Module body harness connector.
- Connect the test leads to the DVOM.
- Measure the resistance of the (R15) Left Side Impact Sensor B Ground circuit between the Left Side Impact Sensor B connector terminal 2 and the ORC Module body harness connector terminal C2-58.
Is the resistance below 1 Ohm?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Repair the (R15) Left Side Impact Sensor B Ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (R13) LEFT SIDE IMPACT SENSOR B CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance of the (R13) Left Side Impact Sensor B Signal circuit between the Left Side Impact Sensor B connector terminal 1 and the ORC Module body harness connector terminal C2-57.
Is the resistance below 1 Ohm?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Repair the (R13) Left Side Impact Sensor B Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the (R13) Left Side Impact Sensor B Signal circuit between the Left Side Impact Sensor B connector terminal 1 and the ORC Module body harness connector terminal C2-57.
- CHECK OPERATION OF THE LEFT SIDE IMPACT SENSOR B
- Replace the Left Side Impact Sensor B in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SENSOR, IMPACT, REMOVAL .
- Reconnect the vehicle body harness to the impact sensor.
- Remove any special tools or jumper wires and reconnect all previously disconnected components - except the Battery.
- If the vehicle is equipped with the standard key ignition, follow this ignition on warning.WARNING:
Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- If the vehicle is equipped with the keyless ignition, follow this ignition on warning.WARNING:
Disconnect the 12-volt battery wait two minutes before proceeding, remove the ORC fuses, connect the 12-volt battery, wait two minutes before proceeding. Cycle the ignition to the On position, then reconnect the ORC fuses. Wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector - use the most current software available.
- Use the scan tool and erase the stored codes in all airbag system modules.
- Turn the Ignition Off, and wait 15 seconds before turning the Ignition On.
- Wait one minute, and read active codes and if there are none present read the stored codes.
Did the active Left Side Impact Sensor B DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 8
No
- Repair is complete.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
- REPLACE THE OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CONTROLLER WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
WARNING:If the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) is dropped at any time, it must be replaced. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
Repair
- Replace the ORC module according to the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CONTROLLER, REMOVAL .
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
