Diagnostic Test

  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    NOTE:

    Diagnose any Misfire DTCs before continuing.

    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.

      Is the DTC active or pending?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

  2. CHECKING THE MDS SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE C101 INLINE HARNESS CONNECTOR AN THE PCM 
    NOTE:

    The DTC must not be active for the actuator test to operate properly, clear all DTC before continuing.

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the C101 harness connector located behind the left side cylinder head.
    3. Using a 12-volt test light, jump between the Ground circuit and the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit at the C101 harness connector (PCM side).
    4. Turn the ignition on.
    5. With the scan tool, actuate the MDS Solenoid 1.

      Does the 12-volt test light flash on and off?

      Yes 

      • Go To  3

      No 

      • Go To  4
  3. CHECK THE MDS SOLENOID RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Measure the resistance between the Ground circuit and the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit in the C101 harness connector (MDS side).
      NOTE:

      It is important to follow the below temp/resistance values to ensure an accurate reading.

      MDS SOLENOID RESISTANCE
      TEMPERATURE VALUE RESISTANCE - MINIMUM RESISTANCE - MAXIMUM
      -18° C (0° F) 7.22 ? 8.12 ?
      0° C (32° F) 7.92 ? 8.82 ?
      20° C (68° F) 8.72 ? 9.62 ?
      38° C (100° F) 9.42 ? 10.32 ?
      66° C (150° F) 10.62 ? 11.52 ?
      93° C (200° F) 11.82 ? 12.72 ?
      121° C (250° F) 12.82 ? 13.72 ?
      149° C (300° F) 14.02 ? 14.92 ?

      Is the resistance within an acceptable range?

      Yes 

      • Go To  12

      No 

      • Go To  8
  4. CHECK THE GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (PCM SIDE) 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Using a 12-volt test light connected to the 12 volts, probe the Ground circuit in the C101 harness connector (PCM side).

      Does the test light illuminate brightly?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

  5. CHECK THE (K451) MDS SOLENOID 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO BATTERY (PCM SIDE) 
    1. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    2. Turn the ignition on.
    3. Measure the voltage on the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit in the C101 harness connector (PCM side).

      Is there voltage present?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short to battery voltage in the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit between the PCM C2 harness connector and C101 harness connector.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  6
  6. CHECK THE (K451) MDS SOLENOID 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND (PCM SIDE) 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Check for continuity between ground and the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit in the C101 harness connector (PCM side).

      Is there continuity between ground and the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short to ground in the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit between the PCM harness connector and the C101 harness connector.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  7
  7. CHECK THE (K451) MDS SOLENOID 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (PCM SIDE) 
    1. Measure the resistance of the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit from the C101 harness connector to the PCM C2 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Repair the open in the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit between the C101 harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  8. CHECK THE GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (MDS SIDE) 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Gain access to the MDS Solenoid. Refer to SOLENOID, MULTIPLE DISPLACEMENT, REMOVAL .
    3. Disconnect the MDS harness connector.
    4. Measure the resistance of the Ground circuit between the C101 harness connector and the MDS 1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  9

      No 

  9. CHECK THE (K451) MDS SOLENOID 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO BATTERY (MDS SIDE) 
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. Measure the voltage on the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit in the MDS Solenoid 1 harness connector.

      Is there voltage present?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short to battery voltage in the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit between the C101 harness connector and the MDS 1 harness connector.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  10
  10. CHECK THE (K451) MDS SOLENOID 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND (MDS SIDE) 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Check for continuity between ground and the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit in the MDS Solenoid 1 harness connector.

      Is there continuity between ground and the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short to ground in the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit between the C101 harness connector and the MDS harness connector.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  11
  11. CHECK THE (K451) MDS SOLENOID 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (MDS SIDE) 
    1. Measure the resistance of the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit from the MDS Solenoid 1 harness connector to the C101 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Repair the open in the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit between the C101 harness connector and the MDS harness connector.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  12. CHECKING HARNESS CONNECTOR C101 AND GROUND CONNECTION 
    1. Inspect the C101 harness connector.
    2. Make sure the Ground terminal and Control terminal are fastened securely into the connector and there are no signs of corrosion or damage.
    3. Check wiring to terminal connection. Look for an internal broken wire under the insulation.
    4. Inspect the Ground for a tight, clean connection.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes 

      No
