Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs and record on the repair order.
- Record the Environmental Data.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes

No
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST .
- Probing of the circuit cavities at the ORC Module body harness connectors or vehicle connectors is only to be done with a approved test lead from the test lead 10159-6 or the use of Breakout Box 8443-55 to prevent vehicle wiring harness connector damage during diagnostic procedures.
- CHECK FOR SHORTED SQUIB CIRCUITS IN RIGHT SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAG WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Disconnect the Right Side Curtain Airbag harness connector.WARNING:
Do not place an intact undeployed airbag face down on a hard surface, the airbag will propel into the air if accidentally deployed. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
NOTE:Check the connectors - Clean and repair as necessary.
- Connect the (special tool #8443A, SRS Load Tool) and the (special tool #8443-8, Jumper, SRS Load) to the Right Side Curtain Airbag harness connector.
- If the vehicle is equipped with the standard key ignition, follow this ignition on warning.WARNING:
Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- If the vehicle is equipped with the keyless ignition, follow this ignition on warning.WARNING:
Disconnect the 12-volt battery wait two minutes before proceeding, remove the ORC fuses, connect the 12-volt battery, wait two minutes before proceeding. Cycle the ignition to the On position, then reconnect the ORC fuses. Wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- With the scan tool, read the active ORC DTCs.
Does the scan tool display: B0029-11-1ST ROW RIGHT WINDOW CURTAIN SQUIB 1 - CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Replace the Right Side Curtain Airbag in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to AIR BAG, SIDE CURTAIN, REMOVAL .
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST .
- Disconnect the Right Side Curtain Airbag harness connector.
- CHECK (R4) RIGHT CURTAIN SQUIB 1 LINE 1 CIRCUIT AND (R2) RIGHT CURTAIN SQUIB 1 LINE 2 CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Disconnect the (special tool #8443A, SRS Load Tool) and the (special tool #8443-8, Jumper, SRS Load) from the Right Side Curtain Airbag harness connector.
- Disconnect the ORC harness connectors.NOTE:
Check connectors - Clean and repair as necessary.
- Connect the test leads to the DVOM.
- Measure the resistance of the (R4) Right Curtain Squib 1 Line 1 circuit between ground and the ORC Module body harness connector terminal C1-B 77.
- Measure the resistance of the (R2) Right Curtain Squib 1 Line 2 circuit between ground and the ORC Module body harness connector terminal C1-B 78.
Is the resistance greater than 5K Ohms on either circuit?
Yes
- Repair the Right Curtain Squib 1 circuits with a resistance greater than 5K Ohms for a short to ground.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- REPLACE THE ORC WARNING:
If the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) is dropped at any time, it must be replaced. Failure to take the proper precautions can result in accidental airbag deployment. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
Repair
- Replace the ORC in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CONTROLLER, REMOVAL .
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST .
- STORED ORC DTC
- With the scan tool, record and erase all DTCs from all Airbag System Modules.
- If any ACTIVE codes are present they must be resolved before diagnosing any stored codes.WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors.
- Look for chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires and broken, bent, pushed out, spread, corroded, or contaminated terminals.
- The following additional checks may assist you in identifying a possible intermittent problem.
- Reconnect any disconnected components and harness connector.
- With the scan tool monitor active codes as you work through the following steps.WARNING:
Maintain a safe distance from all airbags while performing the following steps. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Wiggle the wiring harness and connectors of the related airbag circuit or component.
- If codes are related to the Driver Airbag circuits, rotate the steering wheel from stop to stop.
- If only stored codes return continue the test until the problem area has been isolated.
- In the previous steps you have attempted to recreate the conditions responsible for setting active DTC in question.
Are any ACTIVE DTCs present?
Yes
- Perform the appropriate diagnostic procedure. Refer to DTC INDEX .
