Diagnostic Test

  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    NOTE:

    Diagnose and repair any charging system DTCs before proceeding with this test.

    NOTE:

    Inspect and test the Battery in accordance with the Service Information. Verify that the Battery that is installed in the vehicle is the correct type (must be an AGM Battery of similar capacity to the factory installed).

    NOTE:

    Inspect the Alternator drive belt before continuing with this test.

    NOTE:

    Inspect the vehicle for aftermarket accessories that may exceed the Alternator System output.

    NOTE:

    Inspect the fuses in the PDC. If an open fuse is found, use the wire diagram/schematic as a guide and inspect the wiring and connectors for damage.

    1. Start the engine and allow it to idle.
    2. With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.

      Is the DTC active or pending?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

  2. CHECK THE BATTERY NEGATIVE (-) CABLE FOR HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. Measure the voltage between the B (-) cable engine ground and the Battery Negative (-) Post.

      Is the voltage above 0.25 volt?

      Yes 

      • Repair the Battery Negative (-) circuit for high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE BATTERY POSITIVE (+) CIRCUIT FOR HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Measure the voltage between the B (+) Terminal at the Alternator and the Battery Positive (+) Post.

      Is the voltage above 0.25 volts?

      Yes 

      • Repair the Battery Positive (+) circuit for high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE ALTERNATOR CASE GROUND FOR HIGH RESISTANCE 
    NOTE:

    Make sure all testing equipment and cables are clear of any engine parts before starting the engine.

    1. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature.
    2. Measure the voltage between the Alternator case and the Battery Negative (-) post.

      Is the voltage above 0.25 volts?

      Yes 

      No
