Brake Lamps

The brake (or stop) lamps and the Center High Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL) each have a path to ground at all times through a takeout and eyelet terminal of the body wire harness that is secured to the body sheet metal within the passenger compartment. The brake lamp switch is continually monitored by the BCM. When the normally open circuit of the brake lamp switch is closed by the brake pedal arm, the BCM responds to the brake lamp switch input by providing a control output that energizes or de-energizes the brake lamps.

Some models can be equipped with combined rear lighting. This option allows the brake lamp and the turn signal lamp to use the same single bulb filament. The turn signal operation will take precedence when commanded on.
