Brake Noise
Disc Brake Chirp
- Check for excessive brake rotor runout. If there is excessive brake rotor runout, see COMPONENT TESTS .
- Check for lack of lubricant on brake caliper slides. Lubricate brake caliper slides.
Disc Brake Rattle Or Clunk
- Check for broken or missing anti-rattle spring clips on shoes. If broken replace brake shoes.
- Check for loose guide pins. Tighten guide pins.
- Worn shoe plate or rails. Replace shoes (pads) or knuckle.
Disc Brake Squeaks At Low Speed (While Applying Light Brake Pedal Effort)
- Check brake shoe linings. Replace as necessary.
Drum Brake Chirp
- Check for lack of lubrication on brake shoe support plate where shoes ride. Lubricate shoe contact areas on brake shoe support plates.
- Check for wheel cylinder out of alignment. Loosen wheel cylinder mounting bolts, realign wheel cylinder with brake shoes and tighten mounting bolts.
Drum Brake Clunk
- Drum(s) have threaded machined braking surface.
- If necessary, re-face or replace brake drums.
Drum Brake Howl Or Moan
- Lack of lubricant on brake shoe support plate where shoes ride and at the anchor. Lubricate shoe contact areas on brake shoe support plates and at the anchor.
- Check the rear brake shoes. Replace rear brake shoes, if necessary.
Scraping Or Whirring
- Check ABS wheel speed sensor and tone wheel.
- Inspect, correct or replace faulty component(s).
Scraping (Metal-To-Metal)
- Foreign object interference with brakes. Inspect brakes and remove foreign object.
- Brake shoes worn out. If necessary, replace the brake shoes. Inspect rotors and drums.
