Lower Ball Joint: Removal

  1. Remove cotter pin, lock nut and spring washer from CV axle shaft. Remove hub nut and washer from CV axle shaft. Raise vehicle. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
  2. Unload torsion bar by turning adjuster bolt counterclockwise. Remove adjuster bolt, bearing, swivel and anchor from torsion bar. Remove stabilizer bar retainer bolts and retainers from both lower control arms. Swivel stabilizer bar away from lower control arms. Remove lower shock absorber mounting bolt. Remove rear lower control arm mounting bolt and loosen front bolt.
  3. Remove CV axle shaft. See CV AXLE SHAFT . Remove ball joint cotter pin and nut. Separate ball joint from knuckle using Remover (C-4150A). Support knuckle with a jack stand and raise jack up to gain access to lower ball joint.
  4. On vehicles equipped with ball joints retained by snap ring, remove snap ring. If ball joint is retained by 4 stakes, remove 4 stakes on ball joint flange using a chisel and hammer. Remove ball joint boot. Remove ball joint using Press (C-4212-F), Receiver (8345) and Driver (C-4212-3).
