Knuckle Assembly: Removal

- Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel and tire assembly. Remove brake caliper, rotor, brake dust shield and ABS wheel speed sensor (if equipped). Remove CV axle shaft assembly. See CV AXLE SHAFT . Remove cotter pin and tie rod end nut. Using Remover (C-3894A), separate tie rod end from steering knuckle.
- Support lower suspension arm with jack, and raise to unload rebound bumper. See Figure. Support lower control arm with a hydraulic jack to unload the rebound bumper. Remove upper ball joint cotter pin and nut. Separate upper ball joint from knuckle using Remover (MB-991113). Be careful not to damage ball joint seal.
- Remove cotter pin and nut from lower ball joint stud. Separate ball joint from knuckle using Ball Joint Remover (C-4150A). See Figure.
- Remove steering knuckle from vehicle. Remove hub and bearing assembly from steering knuckle. Inspect ball joint grease seal for cuts, distortion and wear. Check steering knuckle, and hub and bearing assembly for damage. Replace components as necessary.
