Engine - 3.7L: Removal

NOTE:
This procedure applies to both the 4X2 and 4X4 vehicles, steps that apply to the 4X4 vehicle only, are identified.
- Discharge A/C system (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - REFRIGERANT RECOVERY ).
- Drain cooling system (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - DRAINING COOLING SYSTEM ).
- Release fuel rail pressure (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE )
- Remove air cleaner assembly.
- Disconnect battery.
- Remove upper fan shroud.
- Remove accessory drive belt (Refer to ACCESSORY DRIVE ).
- Remove viscous fan (Refer to RADIATOR FAN - VISCOUS ).
- Remove A/C compressor (Refer to A/C COMPRESSOR ) and position out of the way.
- Remove generator and secure away from engine.NOTE: Do NOT remove the phenolic pulley from the P/S pump. It is not required for P/S pump removal.
- Remove power steering pump with lines attached and secure away from engine.
- Disconnect the heater hoses from the engine.
- Disconnect heater hoses from heater core and remove hose assembly.
- Remove upper radiator hose from engine.
- Remove lower radiator hose from engine.
- Disconnect transmission oil cooler lines at the radiator.
- Remove radiator core support bracket.
- Remove radiator assembly (Refer to RADIATOR ), A/C Condensor (Refer to A/C CONDENSER ) and transmission oil cooler (Refer to TRANSMISSION COOLER ).
- Disconnect throttle and speed control cables.
- Disconnect the engine to body ground straps at the left side of cowl.
- Disconnect the engine wiring harness at the following points:
- Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
- Fuel Injectors
- Throttle Position (TPS) Switch
- Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor
- Engine Oil Pressure Switch
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
- Manifold Absolute Pressure MAP) Sensor
- Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
- Coil Over Plugs
- Crankshaft Position Sensor
- Remove coil over plugs.
- Remove fuel rail and secure away from engine.NOTE: It is not necessary to release the quick connect fitting from the fuel supply line for engine removal.
- Remove, the PCV hose.
- Remove the breather hoses.
- Remove the vacuum hose for the power brake booster.
- Disconnect knock sensors.
- Remove engine oil dipstick tube.
- Remove intake manifold.
- Install engine lifting fixture special tool 8247, using original fasteners from the removed intake manifold, and fuel rail. Torque to factory specifications.
- Raise vehicle on hoist.
- Remove exhaust crossover pipe from exhaust manifolds.
- 4X4 vehicles Disconnect axle vent tube from left side engine mount.
- Remove the through bolt retaining nut and bolt from both the left and right side engine mounts (Fig 1
) (Fig 2

- 4X4 vehicles Remove locknut from left and right side engine mount brackets (Fig 2 ).
- Disconnect two ground straps from the lower left hand side and one ground strap from the lower right hand side of the engine.
- Disconnect crankshaft position sensor. (Fig 4
)NOTE: The following step applies to 4X4 vehicles equipped with automatic transmission only.
- 4X4 vehicles Remove the axle isolator bracket from the engine, transmission and the axle (Fig 3 ).
- Remove structural cover (Refer to REMOVAL ).
- Remove starter (Refer to STARTERS ).
- Remove torque converter bolts (Automatic Transmission Only).
- Remove transmission to engine mounting bolts.
- Disconnect the engine block heater power cable from the block heater, if equipped.
- Lower vehicle.
- Remove throttle body resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
- Disconnect throttle and speed control cables.
- Disconnect tube from both the left and right side crankcase breathers (Fig 5 ). Remove breathers
- Remove generator (Refer to GENERATOR ).
- Disconnect the two heater hoses from the timing chain cover and heater core.
- Unclip and remove heater hoses and tubes from the intake manifold (Fig 6 ).
- Disconnect engine harness at the following points:
- Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor (Fig 7 )
- Fuel Injectors
- Throttle Position (TPS) Switch
- Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor
- Engine Oil Pressure Switch
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
- Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) Sensor
- Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
- Coil Over Plugs
- Disconnect the vacuum lines at the throttle body and intake manifold.
- Remove power steering pump and position out of the way.
- Disconnect body ground strap at the right side cowl (Fig 8 ).
- Disconnect body ground strap at the left side cowl (Fig 9
).NOTE: It will be necessary to support the transmission in order to remove the engine.
- Position a suitable jack under the transmission.
- Remove engine from the vehicle.
