DTC P0071: Ambient Temp Sensor Performance: Testing

- Turn ignition on, engine not running. With the DRBIII(R), read DTC's and record the related Freeze Frame data. If the good trip counter is equal to zero, go to next step. If the counter is not equal to zero, see INTERMITTENT CONDITION under SYSTEM TESTS. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-5 under VERIFICATION TESTS.
- Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. Disconnect the ambient temp sensor harness connector. Turn the ignition on, engine not running. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, probe the (G31) AAT sensor signal circuit at the ambient temp sensor harness connector. If the test light illuminates, repair the short to voltage in the (G31) AAT sensor signal circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-5 under VERIFICATION TESTS. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
- Turn the ignition off. Connect the PCM harness connectors. Turn ignition on, engine not running. With the DRBIII(R), read the AAT sensor voltage. If the voltage is above 4.6 volts, go to next step. If the voltage is not above 4.6 volts, go to step 7 .
- Connect a jumper wire across the (G31) AAT sensor signal circuit and the (K4) sensor ground circuit terminals of the sensor harness connector. With the DRBIII(R), read the AAT sensor voltage. If the voltage is below one volt, replace the ambient temperature sensor. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-5 under VERIFICATION TESTS. If the voltage is not below one volt, go to next step.
- Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. Measure the resistance of the (G31) AAT sensor signal circuit from the AAT sensor harness connector to the appropriate terminal of Miller Special Tool (8815). If the resistance is below 5 ohms, go to next step. If the resistance is not below 5 ohms, repair the open in the (G31) AAT sensor signal circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-5 under VERIFICATION TESTS.
- Measure the resistance of the (K4) sensor ground circuit from the AAT sensor harness connector to the appropriate terminal of Miller Special Tool (8815). If the resistance is below 5 ohms, go to step 9 . If the resistance is not below 5 ohms, repair the open in the (K4) sensor ground circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-5 under VERIFICATION TESTS.
- Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. Measure the resistance between ground and the (G31) AAT sensor signal circuit at the AAT sensor harness connector. If the resistance is below 100 ohms, repair the short to ground in the (G31) AAT sensor signal circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-5 under VERIFICATION TESTS. If the resistance is not below 100 ohms, go to next step.
- Measure the resistance between the (G31) AAT sensor signal circuit and the (K4) sensor ground circuit at the AAT sensor harness connector. If the resistance is below 100 ohms, repair the short between the (K4) sensor ground circuit and the (G31) AAT sensor signal circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-5 under VERIFICATION TESTS. If the resistance is not below 100 ohms, go to next step.
- Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wire harness and connectors. Pay particular attention to all power and ground circuits. If there are no possible causes remaining, replace and program the PCM. See PROGRAMMING . Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-5 under VERIFICATION TESTS.
NOTE:
Visually inspect both the component and the PCM connectors. Look for damage, partially broken wires and backed out or corroded terminals.
CAUTION:
DO NOT probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals, resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install Miller Special Tool (8815) to perform diagnosis.

Remove the jumper wire before continuing.

NOTE:
Before continuing, check the PCM harness connector terminals for corrosion, damage, or pushed out terminals. Repair as necessary.
