DTC P0517: Battery Temperature Sensor High: Testing

- Turn ignition on, engine not running. Record all DTC's and the related freeze frame data. With the DRBIII®, monitor the battery temperature sensor voltage. If the voltage is above 4.8 volts, go to next step. If the voltage is not above 4.8 volts, see INTERMITTENT CONDITION (NGC) under SYSTEM TESTS. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-2 (NGC) under VERIFICATION TESTS.
- Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the battery temperature sensor harness connector. Turn the ignition on, engine not running. With the DRBIII® in Sensors, read the battery temp voltage value. Connect a jumper wire between the (K118) batt temp signal circuit and the (K4) sensor ground circuit at the battery temp sensor harness connector. If the battery temp voltage value changed from greater than 4.5 volts to less than one volt, replace the battery temperature sensor. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-2 (NGC) under VERIFICATION TESTS. If the battery temp voltage value did not change from greater than 4.5 volts to less than one volt, go to next step.
- Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. Turn the ignition on, engine not running. Measure the voltage on the (K118) batt temp signal circuit at the battery temp sensor harness connector. If the voltage is above 5.3 volts, repair the short to voltage in the (K118) batt temp signal circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-2 (NGC) under VERIFICATION TESTS. If the voltage is not above 5.3 volts, go to next step.
- Turn the ignition off. Measure the resistance of the (K118) batt temp signal circuit from the battery temp sensor harness connector to the appropriate terminal of Miller Special Tool (8815). If the resistance is below 5 ohms, go to next step. If the resistance is not below 5 ohms, repair the open in the (K118) batt temp signal circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-2 (NGC) under VERIFICATION TESTS.
- Measure the resistance in the (K4) sensor ground circuit from the sensor connector to the appropriate terminal of Miller Special Tool (8815). If the resistance is below 5 ohms, go to next step. If the resistance is not below 5 ohms, repair the open in the (K4) sensor ground circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-2 (NGC) under VERIFICATION TESTS.
- Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wire harness and connectors. Pay particular attention to all power and ground circuits. If there are no possible causes remaining, replace and program the PCM. See PROGRAMMING . Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-2 (NGC) under VERIFICATION TESTS.
WARNING:
When the engine is operating, DO NOT stand in a direct line with the fan. DO NOT put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. DO NOT wear loose clothing.
NOTE:
Remove the jumper wire before continuing.
CAUTION:
DO NOT probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals, resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install Miller Special Tool (8815) to perform diagnosis.

NOTE:
Before continuing, check the PCM harness connector terminals for corrosion, damage, or pushed out terminals. Repair as necessary.
