Drum-in-hat parking brakes are dual shoe, internal expanding units with an automatic self-adjusting mechanism. See Fig 1. When the parking brake pedal is depressed the brake cable pulls the brake shoes outward against the brake drum. When the brake pedal is released, the return springs attached to the brake shoes pull the shoes back to their original position.
