Parking Brake Cables

CAUTION:
Tensioner adjustment is only necessary when the tensioner, or a cable has been replaced or disconnected for service. When adjustment is necessary, perform adjustment only as described. This is necessary to avoid faulty parking brake operation.
- Raise vehicle.
- Back off cable tensioner adjusting nut to create slack in the cables. See Fig 1.
- Remove rear wheel and tire assemblies. Then remove brake drums.
- Verify brakes are in good condition and operating properly.
- Verify parking brake cables operate freely and are not binding, or seized.
- Check rear brake shoe adjustment with standard brake gauge. See Figure and Figure .
- Install drums and verify that drums rotate freely without drag.
- Install wheel and tire assemblies. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Lower vehicle enough for access to parking brake foot pedal. Then fully apply parking brakes.NOTE: Leave parking brakes applied until adjustment is complete.
- Raise vehicle again.
- Mark tensioner rod 1/4" (6.35 mm) from edge of tensioner if no mark is visible. See Fig 1.NOTE: The rod is marked from the factory.
- Tighten adjusting nut on tensioner until the 1/4" (6.35 mm) mark is no longer visible.
- Lower vehicle until rear wheels are 6-8" (15-20 cm) off shop floor.
- Release parking brake foot pedal and verify that rear wheels rotate freely without drag. Then lower vehicle.
CAUTION:
DO NOT loosen or tighten the tensioner adjusting nut for any reason after completing adjustment.
