DTC P0505: Idle Air Control Motor Circuits: Testing

  1. Turn ignition on, with engine off. With the DRBIII(R) scan tool, read the DTCs and record the related freeze frame data. Is the Good Trip Counter displayed and equal to zero? If yes, go to next step. If no, see INTERMITTENT CONDITION  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. NOTE: This step checks for a short between the IAC driver circuits.
  3. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the IAC motor harness connector. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. Measure resistance between (K59) IAC No. 1 driver circuit and IAC driver circuits No. 2, 3 and 4 at the IAC motor harness connector. Is the resistance less than 100 ohms between any of the IAC driver circuits. If yes, repair the IAC driver circuits that are shorted together. If no, go to next step.
  4. NOTE: This step checks for a short between the IAC driver circuits.
  5. Measure resistance between (K40) IAC No. 2 driver circuit and IAC driver circuits No. 3 and 4 at the IAC motor harness connector. Is the resistance less than 5.0 ohms between any of the IAC driver circuits. If yes, repair the IAC driver circuits that are shorted together. If no, go to next step.
  6. NOTE: This step checks for a short between the IAC driver circuits.
  7. Measure resistance between (K60) IAC No. 3 driver circuit and (K40) IAC driver circuit No. 4 at the IAC motor harness connector. Is the resistance less than 5.0 ohms. If yes, repair the IAC driver circuits that are shorted together. If no, go to next step.
  8. Remove the Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay from the Power distribution Center (PDC). Using a jumper wire, jumper between the fused B+ circuit and ASD relay output circuit in the PDC. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Measure the voltage on each of the IAC driver circuits at the IAC motor harness connector. Is the voltage more than one volt at any IAC driver circuit? If yes, repair the IAC driver circuit(s) for a short to voltage. If no, go to next step. Remove the jumper wire before continuing.
  9. NOTE: Repeat each measurement for each IAC driver circuit.
  10. Turn the ignition off. Reinstall ASD relay. Measure the resistance at the IAC motor harness connector of each IAC driver circuit to ground. Is the resistance less than 100 ohms at any IAC driver circuit? If yes, repair the IAC driver circuit(s) for a short to ground. If no, go to next step.
  11. NOTE: Repeat each measurement for each IAC driver circuit.
  12. Turn the ignition off. Reconnect the PCM harness connectors. Start the engine and allow it to idle. Using a test light connected to ground, probe the IAC driver circuits one at a time at the IAC motor harness connector for 10 seconds. Does the test light turn on and off while probing each IAC motor driver circuit? If yes, replace the IAC motor. If no, replace and program the PCM. See PROGRAMMING  .
