DTC P0351: Ignition Coil #1 Primary Circuit: Testing

- Turn ignition on, with engine off. With the DRBIII(R) scan tool, read the DTCs and record the related freeze frame data. Is the Good Trip Counter displayed and equal to zero? If yes, go to next step. If no, see INTERMITTENT CONDITION under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the ignition coil harness connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, check the ASD relay output circuit at the ignition coil harness connector. With the DRBIII(R) scan tool, actuate the ASD relay. Does the test light illuminate brightly? If yes, stop actuation and go to next step. If no, stop actuation and repair the open, high resistance or short to ground in the ASD relay output circuit. Inspect the related fuse.
- Turn the ignition off. Measure the resistance across the ignition coil (component side). Is the resistance 0.95-1.2 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the ignition coil.
- Using a 12-volt test light connected to a 12-volt source, probe the ignition coil driver circuit at the ignition coil harness connector. Crank the engine for 5 seconds while observing the test light. Does the test light blink/flicker? Chose the answer that best fits the test light response. If the test lamp is brightly blinking, replace the ignition coil. If the test lamp stays ON, go to next step. If the test lamp stays OFF, go to step 6 .
- Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. Measure the resistance between the (K19) ignition coil driver circuit and ground. Is the resistance less than 100 ohms? If yes, repair the short to ground in the ignition coil driver circuit. If no, go to step 7 .
- Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. Measure the resistance of the (K19) ignition coil driver circuit from the ignition coil connector to the PCM connector. Is the resistance less than 5.0 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the open in the (K19) ignition coil driver circuit.
- Using the wiring diagram as a guide, inspect the wire harness and connectors. Visually inspect the related wire harness. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires. Visually inspect both the component and the PCM connectors. Pay particular attention to all power and ground circuits. If there are no possible causes remaining, replace and program the PCM. See PROGRAMMING .
NOTE:
Before continuing, disconnect the PCM harness connectors and check the related wiring terminals for corrosion, damage or terminal push out. Repair as necessary.
