DTC P0133: O2 Sensor 1/1 Slow Response, DTC P0139: O2 Sensor 1/2 Slow Response, DTC P0153: O2 Sensor 2/1 Slow Response Or DTC P0159: O2 Sensor 2/2 Slow Response: Testing

NOTE: Check for contaminants that may have damaged the O2 sensor, such as contaminated fuel, unapproved silicone, oil and coolant.
  1. Turn ignition on, with engine off. With the DRBIII(R) scan tool, read the DTCs and record the related freeze frame data. Is the good trip counter displayed and equal to zero? If yes, go to next step. If no, see INTERMITTENT CONDITION  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. WARNING: When the engine is operating, DO NOT stand in a direct line with the fan. DO NOT put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. DO NOT wear loose clothing.
  3. Start the engine. Check for exhaust leaks between the engine and the related O2 sensor. Are there any exhaust leaks? If yes, repair or replace exhaust parts as necessary. If no, go to next step.
  4. NOTE: Ensure the voltmeter leads meet the terminals in the connector and that there is good terminal-to-wire connection. Ensure the voltmeter leads are connected for positive polarity.
  5. Turn engine off. Backprobe the O2 sensor signal circuit between the O2 sensor harness connector and PCM harness connector. Start the engine and allow it to idle. Is the voltage less than 0.10 volt? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the high resistance in the O2 sensor signal circuit.
  6. NOTE: Ensure the voltmeter leads meet the terminals in the connector and that there is good terminal-to-wire connection. Ensure the voltmeter leads are connected for positive polarity.
  7. Turn engine off. Backprobe the O2 sensor ground circuit between the O2 sensor harness connector and PCM harness connector. Start the engine and allow it to idle. Is the voltage less than 0.10 volt? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the high resistance in the O2 sensor ground circuit. Turn the ignition off before continuing.
  8. There are no possible causes remaining, replace the O2 sensor.
