DTC P1686: No Skim Bus Messages: Testing

- Ignition on, engine not running. With the DRBIII® scan tool, read the DTCs and record the related freeze frame data. Is the Good Trip Counter displayed and equal to zero. If yes, go to next step. If no, see INTERMITTENT CONDITION under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- With the DRBIII® scan tool, attempt to communicate with the SKIM. Was the DRBIII® scan tool able to communicate with the SKIM? If yes, go to next step. If no, diagnose communication fault. See BUS +/- SIGNAL OPEN FROM SKIM under COMMUNICATIONS under SYSTEM TESTS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
- Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. Disconnect the SKIM harness connector. Measure the resistance of the PCI Bus circuit from the SKIM harness connector to the appropriate terminal of Miller Special Tool (8815). Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the open in the PCI Bus circuit between the PCM and the SKIM.
- Connect the PCM harness connectors. Replace the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Ignition on, engine not running. Display and erase all PCM and SKIM DTCs. Perform 5 ignition key cycles leaving the ignition key on for 90 seconds per cycle. With the DRB, display PCM DTCs. Does the DRB display the same DTC? If yes, replace and program the Powertrain Control Module per service Information. If no, test is complete.
NOTE:
This test will indicate if the Bus is operational from the DLC to the SKIM.
CAUTION:
Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install Miller Special Tool (8815) to perform diagnosis.
