DTC P0517: Battery Temperature Sensor High: Testing

  1. Ignition on, engine not running. With the DRBIII® scan tool, read DTCs and record the related freeze frame data. With the DRBIII® scan tool, read the battery temperature sensor voltage. Is the voltage above 4.8 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, see INTERMITTENT CONDITION  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the battery temperature harness connector. Ignition on, engine not running. With the DRBIII® scan tool, in sensors, read the battery temperature voltage value. Connect a jumper wire between the (K118) battery temperature signal circuit and the (K4) sensor ground circuit at the battery temperature harness connector. Did the battery temperature voltage value change from greater than 4.5 volts to less than 1.0 volt. If yes, replace the battery temperature sensor. If no, go to next step.
    NOTE: Remove the jumper wire before continuing.
  3. WARNING: When the engine is operating, do not stand in a direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing.
  4. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. Ignition on, engine not running. Measure the voltage of the (K118) battery temperature signal circuit at the battery temperature sensor harness connector. Is the voltage above 5.3 ohms? If yes, repair the short to voltage in the (K118) battery temperature signal circuit. If no, go to next step.
  5. CAUTION: Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install Miller Special Tool (8815) to perform diagnosis.
  6. Turn the ignition off. Measure the resistance of the (K118) battery temperature signal circuit from the battery temperature sensor harness connector to the appropriate terminal of Miller Special Tool (8815). Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the open in the (K118) battery temperature signal circuit.
  7. CAUTION: Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install Miller Special Tool (8815) to perform diagnosis.
  8. Measure the resistance of the (K4) sensor ground circuit from the battery temperature sensor harness connector to the appropriate terminal of Miller Special Tool (8815). Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the open in the (K4) sensor ground circuit.
  9. NOTE: Before continuing, disconnect the PCM harness connectors and check the related wiring terminals for corrosion, damage or terminal push out. Repair as necessary.
  10. Using the wiring diagram as a guide, inspect the wire harness and connectors. Visually inspect the related wire harness. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires. Visually inspect both the component and the PCM connectors. Pay particular attention to all power and ground circuits. If there are no possible causes remaining, replace and program the PCM.
