Disassembly (Durango)

  1. Drain old brake fluid out of caliper into drain pan.
  2. Use a C-clamp with a block of wood and cover one piston. See Fig 1.
  3. Use another piece of wood and pad it with 1" thickness of shop towels. Place this piece in the outboard shoe side of the caliper in from of the other piston (the piston without a piece of wood clamped onto it). This will cushion and protect caliper piston during removal. See Fig 2.
  4. WARNING: DO NOT attempt to catch the piston as it leaves the bore. This may result in personal injury.
CAUTION: DO NOT blow the piston out of the bore with sustained air pressure. This could result in a cracked piston. Use only enough air pressure to ease the piston out.
  5. Remove caliper piston with short bursts of compressed air. Apply air pressure through fluid inlet port of caliper.
  6. Remove the C-clamp and block of wood from the caliper and clamp it over the dust boot of the first piston removed. This will seal the empty piston bore.
  7. Remove the second piston using the same procedure with short bursts of low air pressure air.
  8. Remove piston dust boots with a suitable pry tool. See Fig 3.
  9. Remove caliper piston seal with wood pencil or plastic tool. See Fig 4. DO NOT use metal tools as they will scratch piston bore.
  10. Push caliper mounting bolt bushings out of boot seals and remove boot seals from the caliper. See Fig 5.
  11. Remove caliper bleed screw and cap.
