Drum Brake Shoes: Installation

  1. Lubricate the 8 shoe contact areas on the support plate and anchor using Mopar Multi-Purpose Lubricant or equivalent. See Fig 1 .
  2. Assemble the front and rear brake shoe assembly, automatic adjuster screw and upper return spring on the vehicle.
  3. Install the pre-assembled brake shoes, automatic adjuster screw, and upper return spring on the brake support plate. See Figure .
  4. Install the wave washer on the pin of parking brake lever.
  5. Install the pin on the parking brake lever into hole in rear brake shoe assembly. See Fig 2 .
  6. Install both brake shoe-to-brake support plate hold down pins and clips. See Figure .
  7. Install the lower brake shoe-to-anchor plate return spring. See Figure .
  8. Install the automatic adjustment lever on the leading brake shoe. See Figure .
  9. Install the automatic adjustment lever-to-brake shoe spring. See Figure .
  10. CAUTION: DO NOT over adjust the brakes.
  11. Adjust the brake shoes out until the drum lightly drags on the shoes when it is installed.
  12. Install the brake drum. See Figure .
  13. Install the tire and wheel assembly. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  14. Adjust the rear brake shoes. See REAR BRAKE SHOES  under ADJUSTMENTS.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Road test vehicle stopping in both the forward and reverse directions. The automatic adjuster will continue to adjust the brakes during the road test of the vehicle.
