Reassembly (Piston & Seal)
NOTE:
Never use an old piston seal.
- Lubricate caliper pistons, piston seals and piston bores with clean, fresh brake fluid.
- Install piston seal in groove of caliper bore. Seal should be started at one area of groove and gently worked around and into the groove using only your clean fingers to seat it. See Fig 1 .
- Install NEW boot on piston and work boot lip into groove at top of piston. Stretch boot rearward straightening boot folds, then move boot forward as necessary until folds snap into place.
- Install piston into caliper bore pushing it past the piston seal until it bottoms in the caliper bore. See Fig 2 . Using a piece of wood or wooden hammer handle may assist in installing piston, as long as piston and boot damage is avoided.
- Seat dust boot in caliper counter bore using Installer (C-4689) with Handle (C-4171). See Fig 3 . Install dust boot until it bottoms.
- Install disc brake shoes. See DISC BRAKE SHOES under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Reinstall the caliper on the vehicle and bleed the brakes as necessary. See BLEEDING PROCEDURES under BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM.
CAUTION:
DO NOT over-seat dust boot or damage will occur.
