Proportioning Valve
NOTE:
Only vehicles without anti-lock brakes have proportioning valves. Vehicles with anti-lock brakes have electronic brake distribution which is built into integrated control unit.
- Rear wheel lock-up or skidding indicates faulty proportioning valve. See PROPORTIONING VALVE IDENTIFICATION
table. Road test vehicle to determine which rear brake system is faulty. Before testing proportioning valve, inspect rear brake lining for contamination.
- Install brake pedal holder, to isolate master cylinder from hydraulic system. Remove brakeline from suspect proportioning valve. See Fig 1
. Remove proportioning valve from master cylinder. Install Brake Pressure Adapters (8644 and 8187-2), onto proportioning valve. Install proportioning valve back into master cylinder outlet port.
- Attach a Pressure Gauge (C-4007-A), to each pressure adapter. See Fig 2
. Bleed hoses and gauges. Have an assistant depress and hold pressure on brake pedal. Note and record pressure gauge readings. If inlet or outlet pressure readings do not agree with specification, replace proportioning valve. See BRAKE PRESSURE
table.
- To install reverse removal procedure. Reinstall brake holder on brake pedal and remove test equipment from vehicle. Bleed affected brakeline. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM
