Rear Brake Shoes

NOTE: Normally rear drum brake shoes do not require adjustment, as automatic adjuster assembly is used. Adjustment procedure is an initial brake adjustment to be used after replacing brake shoes to speed up brake shoe adjustment time.
  1. Raise and support vehicle so rear wheels are free to rotate. Ensure parking brake pedal is fully released. Remove access plug from inside of brake backing plate for access to star wheel on automatic adjuster assembly.
  2. Using brake adjuster or screwdriver, rotate star wheel on automatic adjuster assembly by moving brake adjuster or screwdriver upward while rotating rear wheel. Rotate star wheel on automatic adjuster assembly until slight rear wheel drag is felt while rotating rear wheel.
  3. Using small screwdriver, hold adjuster lever away from star wheel on automatic adjuster assembly. Rotate star wheel until rear wheel spins freely with no brake drag. Reinstall access plug. Road test vehicle. Automatic adjuster will continue brake adjustment during road test.
