Removal & Installation: CLOCKSPRING: Removal

  1. If replacing a deployed air bag, clockspring must be replaced. Before proceeding, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  .
  2. Position wheels in straight-ahead position. Clockspring is located behind steering wheel. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . Remove left instrument panel end cover. Remove instrument panel center bezel and hood. Remove knee bolster.

  3. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds. Remove driver-side air bag module and steering wheel. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE & STEERING WHEEL  . Disconnect clockspring connectors.
  4. Remove multi-function switch. Disconnect natural 3-way and Yellow  2-way connectors from back side of clockspring. Lift clockspring locking tab to remove clockspring assembly from steering shaft. Clockspring cannot be repaired and must be replaced if faulty.
