Parking Brake Cables

  1. Remove shifter boot or PRNDL plate from center console. Remove 2 front center console-to-forward console screws. Raise parking brake lever sufficiently to provide clearance for console removal. Remove center console. Lower parking brake lever.
  2. Loosen parking brake lever output cable adjusting nut. Using screwdriver, remove parking brake lever output cable retainer from cable and parking brake cable tension equalizer (discard retainer). See Fig 1 . Remove tension equalizer and discard.
  3. Install NEW tension equalizer and cable retainer. Ensure cable retainer is closed and securely latched. Ensure parking brake lever is fully released. Tighten output cable adjusting nut until 0.5" (12 mm) of thread is past top edge of adjusting nut.
  4. Fully apply parking brake lever (15 clicks on 1996 models; 21 clicks on 1997 models) one time, then release. Ensure rear wheels rotate freely without dragging. Ensure parking brake lever action is firm with a maximum of 15 clicks (21 clicks for 1997). Install center console. Install shifter boot or PRNDL plate.
