Valve Springs: Removal

  1. Remove valve cover. On each rocker arm, rotate camshaft until base circle of camshaft is in contact with rocker arm.
  2. Depress valve spring using Valve Spring Compressor (C-4682) and slide rocker arm out. Keep rocker arms in order for reinstallation. Remove hydraulic lash adjuster. Rotate crankshaft until piston of cylinder concerned is at TDC.
  3. Remove spark plug. Install an air line and apply 90-120 psi (6.3-8.4 kg/cm2 ) air pressure to hold valves closed. Install Valve Spring Compressor (C-4682) and compress valve spring. See Fig 1.

  4. Remove valve locks, valve spring, retainer and valve spring seat. Remove oil seal by gently prying oil seal side-to-side using screwdriver.
