Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Removal

  1. Remove upper timing belt cover. Remove valve cover and curtain. To avoid disturbing engine timing, leave camshaft sprocket indexed on timing belt. Using a stretch cord and Engine Support (C-4852), provide adequate tension on sprocket and belt assembly to prevent engine timing loss during removal of camshaft pulley. See Figure.
  2. Mark rocker arms for reassembly reference. Rotate camshaft until base circle of cam is in contact with each rocker arm. Install Spring Compressor (C-4682) and compress valve spring. Remove rocker arm. Ensure components are kept in order for reassembly reference.
  3. Loosen camshaft bearing cap nuts several turns. Using soft-faced mallet, tap rear of camshaft to loosen bearing caps. Remove camshaft cap nuts and bearing caps so cam does not cock in cylinder head. Remove camshaft and oil seals.
CAUTION: Ensure camshaft does not cock during removal. Damage to camshaft and/or bearing thrust surfaces could result.
