Main Bearings

NOTE: Before tightening main and connecting rod bolts, threads should be checked for "necking" by holding a straightedge against threads. If threads do not fully touch straightedge, bolt must be replaced.

Measure main bearing clearance using Plastigage method. Clearance should be .0003-.0031" (.007-.080 mm). Crankshaft journal out-of-round should not exceed .0005" (.013 mm). Crankshaft end play should be .002-.007" (.05-.18 mm) and not exceed .015" (.37 mm). Main bearings caps are numbered 1 through 5. Main bearing cap No. 1 is closest to timing belt end of engine.
