Connecting Rod Bearings

NOTE: Before tightening main and connecting rod bolts, threads should be checked for "necking" by holding a straightedge against threads. If threads do not fully touch straightedge, bolt must be replaced.
  1. Use Plastigage method to check rod bearing clearance. Before installing nuts, oil connecting rod bolt threads. Tighten nuts as follows:
    • Tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 N.m).
    • Tighten 1/4 turn.
  2. Rod bearing clearance for new parts should be .0008-.0034" (.019-.087 mm). Wear limit for used components is .0042" (.107 mm). Rod journal out-of-round maximum is .0003" (.007 mm). Rod side clearance should be .005-.013" (.13-.32 mm).
