- Remove booster reserve by applying brakes several times with engine off until all reserve is depleted.
NOTE:
If master cylinder is known or suspected to have air in bore, then it must be bled before any wheel cylinder or caliper is bled.
- Fill master cylinder reservoir with brake fluid. Keep master cylinder at least one-half full of fluid during bleeding operation. Disconnect front brake line(s) at master cylinder. Allow brake fluid to fill master cylinder until it begins to flow from front pipe connector port. Connect front brake line(s) to master cylinder.
- Tighten brake lines to 16 N.m (12 ft. lbs.). See Fig 1. Slowly push and hold brake pedal one time. Loosen front brake line at master cylinder to purge air from cylinder. Tighten brake line, and then release brake pedal slowly. Wait 15 seconds before proceeding to next step. Repeat sequence, including 15-second wait, until all air is removed from master cylinder bore.
CAUTION:
Care must be taken to prevent brake fluid from contacting any painted surface to prevent damage to paint finish.
- After all air has been removed at forward connection(s), bleed master cylinder at rear connection(s) in same manner as with front connections.
NOTE:
For vehicles equipped with a non-antilock braking system, bleeding sequence is as follows: right rear, left rear, left front and right front.
- Attach a transparent tube over valve. Allow tube to hang submerged in brake fluid in a transparent container. Slowly push and hold brake pedal one time. Remove bleeder valve dust cover and loosen bleeder screw to purge air from cylinder. See Fig 2. Slowly release brake pedal. Wait 15 seconds before proceeding with next step.
NOTE:
Rapid pumping of brake special pushes master cylinder secondary piston down bore in a manner that makes it difficult to bleed system.
- Repeat sequence, including 15-second wait, until all air is removed. It may be necessary to repeat sequence 10 or more times to remove all air. Tighten bleeder screw. Tighten bleeder screw to 8 N.m (71 INCH lbs.). Proceed to bleed front brakes following appropriate sequence. Check brake pedal for sponginess. Repeat entire bleeding procedure to correct this condition.
