- Disconnect negative battery cable. Recover refrigerant. Remove compressor. Remove clutch drive plate and hub assembly. Remove pulley rotor and bearing assembly retaining ring using snap ring pliers J-6083. With compressor mounted to compressor holding fixture J-34992, install pulley puller J-33020 into inner circle of slots in pulley rotor.
- Turn pulley puller clockwise in slots to engage puller tangs with segments between slots in rotor. Hold pulley puller in place and tighten puller bolt against compressor shaft to remove pulley rotor and bearing assembly.
NOTE:
The rotor hub must be properly supported to prevent damage to pulley rotor during bearing removal.
- Remove puller bolt from pulley puller. With puller tangs still engaged in rotor slots, invert assembly onto a solid flat surface or blocks.
NOTE:
It is not necessary to remove staking in front of bearing to remove bearing. It will be necessary to file away old stake metal for proper clearance for new bearing to be installed into rotor bore or bearing may be damaged.
- Drive bearing out of rotor hub with bearing remover J-9398-A and driver handle J-8092.
NOTE:
Do not support rotor by resting pulley rim on a flat surface during bearing installation or rotor face could be damaged.
- To assemble, invert pulley rotor and place it on a support block to fully support the rotor hub during bearing installation. Align new bearing squarely in pulley bore. Use bearing installer J-9481 and driver handle J-8092, drive bearing fully into pulley bore. Place bearing staking guide J-33019-1 and bearing staking pin J-33019-2 in rotor hub core.
- Shift rotor and bearing assembly on block to give full support to hub under staking pin. A heavy-duty rubber band may be used to hold staking tool pin in guide. The pin should be properly positioned in guide after each impact on pin.
CAUTION:
When striking pin with a hammer, take care to avoid personal injury.
- Strike pin with a hammer until a metal stake, similar to original is formed down to, but not touching, bearing. The metal stake should not contact outer race of bearing to avoid possibility of distorting outer race. Stake in three places, each 120 degrees apart.
- With compressor mounted to holding fixture J-34992, position rotor and bearing assembly on compressor housing. Position pulley rotor and bearing installer J-33017 and puller pilot J-33023-A directly over inner race of bearing. Position puller crossbar J-8433-1 center forcing bolt on puller pilot, and assemble 2 through-bolts and washers through slots on puller crossbar. Thread through bolts into holding fixture. The thread of through-bolts should engage full thickness of fixture.
- Tighten center forcing screw J-8433-3 in puller crossbar to force pulley rotor and bearing assembly onto compressor housing. Install rotor and bearing assembly retainer ring using snap ring pliers J-6083. Reinstall clutch drive plate and hub assembly. Install compressor. Connect negative battery cable. Evacuate and recharge A/C system.
