Rear Parking Brake Shoe: Removal

  1. Remove rotor. Disconnect parking brake cable from brake backplate operating level. Pry off shaft dust cover. Remove spindle shaft caulking nut. Remove wheel hub assembly. Remove bolts that secure splash shield, backplate, parking brake shoe assembly to steering knuckle.
  2. Remove splash shield/backplate/shoe assembly from steering knuckle. Measure shoe assembly diameter. Remove screw that secures parking brake shoe hold-down spring assembly to backplate. See Fig 2 .
  3. Remove parking brake shoe, sliding it away from actuation mechanism. Remove splash shield. Remove adjuster screw and nut. Remove tappet and pushrod. Use a 3.5 mm (.14") drill to remove pop rivets that hold dust cover assembly and adjuster pawl to backplate. Remove lever and adjuster pawl.
