Rear Parking Brake Shoe: Installation

CAUTION: A high flash point oil-free solvent, such as tricloroethylene or acetone, used in cleaning brake components, such as backplates, is highly flammable and is unhealthy if inhaled for prolonged periods.

Clean backplate to make sure actuation cavity is free from grease and any other contamination. Check shoe assembly position. Shoe should fit centered on splash shield. Inspect splash shield for rust or any other damage. Replace splash shield, if necessary. Install adjuster pawl to backplate and secure it with a pop rivet. Slide dust cover onto dust cover notches.
Insert lever and dust cover assembly into backplate. Secure dust cover retainer with pop rivets. Lubricate actuation cavity and tappet with grease. Make sure that internal bore of cavity is covered with grease. Secure splash shield and backplate to steering knuckle with bolts. Tighten splash shield bolts to 65 N.m (48 ft. lbs.). Secure parking brake shoe hold-down spring assembly with screw. Tighten parking brake shoe hold-down spring assembly screw to 4 N.m (35 INCH lbs.).
Connect parking brake adjustment screw to adjustment nut. Tighten adjustment nut to point at which it meets screw, and then back off one-quarter turn. Install adjustment screw and adjustment nut into backplate actuation mechanism on adjustment pawl side. Keep shoe slot parallel with backplate face.
Install pushrod into tappet. Make sure pushrod is set correctly into lever socket by holding lever into backplate while inserting pushrod and tappet. Clean excess grease away using a clean rag.
CAUTION: The shoe assembly must be resting on shield with brand side up. Clean hands are required when handling parking brake shoe.
Install parking brake shoe, engaging shoe tips in both adjusting screw and tappet slot. Install wheel hub assembly. Secure wheel hub assembly with wheel hub assembly-to-spindle shaft caulking nut. Tighten wheel hub assembly-to-spindle shaft caulking nut to 285 N.m (210 ft. lbs.). Install shaft dust cover. Install parking brake cable to parking brake lever on each side of vehicle. Adjust parking brake. Install rotor.
