Section 3 (8HP50/850RE Automatic Transmission (Service Information)): Removal

- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE
.
- Apply alignment index marks (1) on the transmission and axle flanges.
- Remove the driveshaft to rear axle flange bolts (1) and washers (2).
- Remove the driveshaft center bearing to body bolts (2).
- Remove the driveshaft to transmission flange bolts (1) and washers (2).
- Position aside the driveshaft (1) and support (2).
- For All Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles , remove the steering gear assembly. Refer to GEAR, REMOVAL .
- For AWD vehicles , remove the transfer case. Refer to REMOVAL .
- For Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles , remove the lower intermediate steering shaft. Refer to SHAFT, INTERMEDIATE, LOWER, REMOVAL .
- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVAL

- Disconnect the Manual Park Release (MPR) cable (1), remove the MPR cable bracket bolts (2) and position the MPR bracket/cable aside.
- The torque converter is attached with three sets of two bolts (1) 120° apart as shown in illustration.
- Rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction for access, and through the starter opening, remove the torque converter bolts (1).
- Turn the locking mechanism lock (1) of the transmission wire harness connector (2) counter-clockwise to release the lock.
- Disconnect the transmission wire harness connector (1).
- Detach the wiring harness (1) from the transmission.
- Detach the wiring harness (1) from the transmission.
- Detach the wiring harness (1) from the transmission and position the wiring harness (2) aside.
- Detach the wiring harness (1) from the transmission.
- Remove the wiring harness bracket bolts (2), Detach the wiring harness (1) from the transmission and position aside the wiring harness.
- Detach the wiring harness (1) from the transmission.
- Remove the wiring harness bracket nut (1).
- Remove the wiring harness bracket nut (1).
- Position aside the vent hose (1) and the vacuum pump and bracket (2).
- Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler lines (1) from the transmission. Refer to TRANSMISSION, STANDARD PROCEDURE
.CAUTION:
When supporting or lifting the transmission at the oil pan the weight of the transmission must be distributed evenly on the lifting fixture. Failure to do so could damage the oil pan and transmission.
- For RWD
vehicles, raise the transmission slightly with a transmission jack (1) to relieve load on the crossmember.
- For RWD
vehicles, remove the crossmember bolts (1), the transmission mount bolts (2) and remove the crossmember.
- Remove the five (four shown in illustration) bottom transmission to engine bolts (1).
- Remove the Left Hand (LH) engine to transmission bolt (3), the cover bolt (1) and the cover (2).
- Remove the top transmission to engine stud bolts (1).
- Remove the RH transmission to engine stud bolt (1).
- Hold the torque converter in place during transmission removal.
- Lower the transmission and remove the transmission from the vehicle.
- Remove the transmission mount bolts (2) and the transmission mount (3).
- Remove the adapter bracket bolts (1) and the adapter bracket (4).
