Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2015 RAM 3500 HD and 2015 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. ACTIVE DTC
    NOTE:

If there are 5-Volt Reference related DTCs present, perform the diagnostics on those DTCs before proceeding with this diagnostic tree.

    NOTE:

If DTCs P245A, P245C, P245D, P2494 or P2495 are present, perform the diagnostics on those DTCs before proceeding with this diagnostic tree.

    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, record all Freeze frame data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for 75 seconds.
    5. Drive the vehicle for at least five minutes, For some of the drive, go at least 64 km/h (40 MPH). At some point stop the vehicle and turn the engine off for 10 seconds or more; then restart and continue. Make sure the transmission shifts through all gears.
    6. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

Is DTC P2493 active or pending?

      Yes

      • Go To  2

      No

  2. CHECK FOR A STUCK EGR COOLER BYPASS VALVE
    1. Rotate the bypass valve pulley clockwise. This is the pulley attached to the valve (pulley farthest from the electrical connector) and not the actuator.
      NOTE:

The valve may have internal rust build up causing sticking: Once the pulley can rotate, the EBV can operate normally again and be reused.

Can you rotate the EBV Pulley (valve side, pulley furtherest form the electrical connector) clockwise by hand?

      Yes

      • Go To  3

      No

      • Replace the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .
  3. ACTIVE DTC

      Yes

      • Go To  4

      No

  4. CHECK THE (K834) 5 VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the EBV harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Measure the voltage between the (K834) 5 Volt Supply circuit and the (K934) Sensor Return circuit at the EBV harness connector.

Is the voltage between 4.75 Volts and 5.25 Volts?

      Yes

      • Go To  5

      No

      • Repair the (K834) 5 Volt Supply circuit and/or the (K934) Sensor Return circuit for an open/high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .
  5. EGR COOLER BYPASS VALVE
    1. Place a jumper wire between the (K934) Sensor Return circuit and the (K671) EGR Bypass Position Signal circuit at the EBV harness connector.

      Did DTC P2494 become active?

      Yes

      • Replace the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .

      No

      • Go To  6
  6. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE
    1. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.

Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Using the recorded Freeze Frame and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    10. With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes

      No
