Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2015 RAM 3500 HD and 2015 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. ACTIVE DTC
    NOTE:

If any other charging system related DTCs are present, perform those Diagnostic trees first before beginning this one.

    NOTE:

Batteries must be fully charged and capable of passing a battery load test. The generator belt tension must be within specification. Inspect the vehicle for any aftermarket equipment that may exceed the maximum Generator output.

    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    3. Turn the ignition off for 75 seconds.
    4. Start the engine and let idle for up to five minutes.
    5. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC reset?

      Yes

      • Go To  2

      No

  2. BATTERY TERMINALS DAMAGED, CORRODED, OR LOOSE CONNECTIONS
    1. Visually inspect the positive and negative connections at the battery. Visually inspect the battery negative connections at the engine block.

Are the connections free of corrosion and are they tight?

      Yes

      • Go To  3

      No

  3. CHECK THE (A916) BATTERY SENSE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO THE AUXILIARY BATTERY
    1. Using the scan tool, monitor Battery voltage in the PCM.
    2. Measure battery voltage of the Primary Battery (one that powers PCM) using a Voltmeter.

Is the reported voltage from the scan tool equal to both Battery voltages?

      Yes

      • Go To  4

      No

      • Repair the (A916) Battery Sense circuit for a short to the Auxiliary Battery.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .
  4. CHECK THE (A1) BATTERY CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE PRIMARY BATTERY AND THE AUXILIARY BATTERY
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Using a Voltmeter, measure Battery voltage of the Auxiliary Battery (the one that the Generator charges).

Is the measured voltage of the Auxiliary Battery equal to the measured voltage of the primary Battery?

      Yes

      • Go To  6

      No

      • Go To  5
  5. CHECK THE (A1) BATTERY CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE PRIMARY BATTERY AND THE AUXILIARY BATTERY FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
    1. Disconnect the positive Battery cables from both the Primary Battery and the Auxiliary Battery.
    2. Disconnect the (A1) Battery circuit that connects the Primary Battery to the Auxiliary Battery.
      NOTE:

Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.

    3. Measure the resistance of the (A1) Battery circuit between the Primary Battery to the Auxiliary Battery.

Is the resistance below 10.0 Ohms?

      Yes

      • Go To  6

      No

      • Repair the (A1) Battery circuit between the Primary Battery and the Auxiliary Battery for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .
  6. CHECK THE (A12) GENERATOR 2 BATTERY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
    1. Disconnect the (A12) Battery circuit at the Generator 2 stud and the Primary Battery
    2. Measure the resistance of the (A12) Battery circuit between Generator 2 and the Primary Battery.

Is the resistance below 10.0 Ohms?

      Yes

      • Go To  7

      No

      • Repair the (A12) Battery circuit between Generator 2 and the Primary Battery for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .
  7. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE
    1. Disconnect the Generator 2 harness connector.
    2. Measure the resistance between the Generator 2 output stud and the Generator Voltage Sensor circuit at the Generator.

Is the resistance below 10.0 Ohms?

      Yes

      No
