Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2015 RAM 3500 HD and 2015 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. SYSTEM ACTUATION 
    NOTE:

    Verify that the correct PTO jumper harness was installed.

    NOTE:

    If there are any Communication or CAN BUS DTCs present, perform the Diagnostics for those DTCs before continuing with this one.

    NOTE:

    If there are any TCM DTCs related to the PTO system present, perform the Diagnostics for those DTCs before continuing with this one.

    1. Turn the Ignition on.
    2. Using the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC), verify that the vehicle is in Standard/Stationary mode.
    3. Start the engine.
    4. Go to the Upper Switch Bank on the Dashboard and press the PTO Switch.
      NOTE:

      The Engine speed should increase about 200 RPMs.

      Does the Engine speed increase about 200 RPMs?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

      • Go To  7
  2. CHECK THE PTO RELAY OUTPUT VOLTAGE 
    1. Turn the Ignition off for 75 seconds.
    2. Turn the Ignition on.
    3. Using the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC), verify that the vehicle is in Standard/Stationary mode.
    4. Start the engine.
    5. Go to the Upper Switch Bank on the Dashboard and press the PTO Switch.
      NOTE:

      The test light must be applied within 30 seconds of pressing the PTO Switch.

    6. With a 12-volt test light connected to ground, check the (F605) PTO Relay Output circuit at the Upfitter Connector-Aux 2.

      Does the test light illuminate as brightly as it does when connected directly to the Battery?

      Yes 

      • Test Complete. The Chrysler circuits are operating properly at this time. Verify that the correct Upfitter PTO assembly was installed. Verify that it was installed properly. Confirm that the correct wiring and jumpers were used during installation.

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE PTO RELAY FUSE 
    1. Check Fuse 08-20A, located in the Auxiliary PDC, for an open circuit.

      Is the fuse blown?

      Yes 

      • Replace Fuse 08-20A. Check related wiring for a short circuit that could cause a fuse to blow.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE PTO/AUX 5 RELAY 
    1. Turn the Ignition off.
    2. Replace the PTO/AUX 5 Relay (Aux PDC Name: 'Relay 07') with a known good relay.
    3. Turn the Ignition on.
    4. Using the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC), verify that the vehicle is in Standard/Stationary mode.
    5. Start the engine.
    6. Go to the Upper Switch Bank on the Dashboard and press the PTO Switch.
    7. With a 12-volt test light connected to ground, check the (F605) PTO Relay Output circuit at the Upfitter Connector-Aux 2.

      Does the test light illuminate as brightly as it does when connected directly to the Battery?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  5
  5. CHECK THE PTO SWITCH INPUT TO THE PCM 
    1. Start the engine.
    2. Using the scan tool, select PCM Data View.
    3. Go to the Upper Switch Bank on the Dashboard and press the PTO Switch.
    4. Review the PTO input data to verify the status of the PTO switch.

      Is the PTO switch status displayed as 'True'?

      Yes 

      • For manual transmission, Go To  12
      • For automatic transmission, Go To  6

      No 

      • Go To  7
  6. CHECK THE PTO STATUS IN THE TCM 
    1. Using the scan tool, select the TCM Data View.
    2. View the PTO output status to verify that the PTO 'ON' value is displayed.

      Is the PTO status 'ON'?

      Yes 

      • Go To  14

      No 

      • If all enable conditions are met for system operation and there are no TCM communication or TCM PTO relay control circuit DTCs, replace and program the Transmission Control Module (TCM) in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .
  7. CHECK THE (K425) PTO SWITCH INPUT TO THE PCM 
    1. Turn the ignition off for 75 seconds.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Go to the Upper Switch Bank on the Dashboard and toggle the PTO Switch on and off.
    5. With a 12-volt test light connected to 12-volts, check the (K425) PTO Switch Input circuit at the PCM C2 harness connector.
      NOTE:

      The PTO Switch sends a ground signal to the PCM when turned on.

      Does the test light toggle on and off along with the PTO Switch operation?

      Yes 

      • Go To  20

      No 

      • Go To  8
  8. CHECK THE (K425) PTO SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (PCM SECTION) 
    NOTE:

    The PTO Switch Input circuit is divided into two halves. One section is on the 'PCM' side of the PTO/AUX 5 Jumper harness (K425). The other section is on the 'Upper Switch Bank' side of the Jumper (P819).

    NOTE:

    Some PTO circuits do not follow conventional architecture. Use the MINI Schematic provided (above) and follow instructions carefully.

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the Upfitter Supplied Jumper harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance of the (K425) PTO Switch Input circuit between the PTO/AUX 5 Jumper harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  9

      No 

  9. CHECK THE (K425) PTO SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND (PCM SECTION) 
    NOTE:

    Some PTO circuits do not follow conventional architecture. Use the MINI Schematic provided (above) and follow instructions carefully.

    1. Check for continuity between ground and the (K425) PTO Switch Input circuit at the PCM C2 harness connector.

      Is there continuity between ground and the (K425) PTO Switch Input circuit?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  10
  10. CHECK THE (P819) PTO SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (SWITCH BANK SECTION) 
    NOTE:

    Some PTO circuits do not follow conventional architecture. Use the MINI Schematic provided (above) and follow instructions carefully.

    1. Disconnect the Upper Switch Bank harness connector (located on the Dashboard).
    2. Measure the resistance of the (P819) PTO Switch Input circuit between the PTO/AUX 5 Jumper harness connector and the Upper Switch Bank harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  11

      No 

  11. CHECK THE (P819) PTO SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND (SWITCH BANK SECTION) 
    NOTE:

    Some PTO circuits do not follow conventional architecture. Use the MINI Schematic provided (above) and follow instructions carefully.

    1. Check for continuity between ground and the (P819) PTO Switch Input circuit at the Upper Switch Bank harness connector.

      Is there continuity between ground and the (P819) PTO Switch Input circuit?

      Yes 

      No 

  12. CHECK THE (K427) PTO RELAY ENABLE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (PCM SECTION) 
    NOTE:

    This Test Step can only be performed on a vehicle with a manual transmission application.

    NOTE:

    Some PTO circuits do not follow conventional architecture. Use the MINI Schematic provided (above) and follow instructions carefully.

    NOTE:

    The PTO Relay Enable circuit is divided into two halves. One section is on the 'PCM' side of the PTO/AUX 5 Jumper harness (K427). The other section is on the 'Aux PDC' side of the Jumper (P819).

    1. Disconnect the Upfitter Supplied Jumper harness connector.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance of the (K427) PTO Relay Enable circuit between the PTO/AUX 5 Jumper harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  13

      No 

  13. CHECK THE (K427) PTO RELAY ENABLE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND (PCM SECTION) 
    NOTE:

    This Test Step can only be performed on a vehicle with a manual transmission application.

    NOTE:

    Some PTO circuits do not follow conventional architecture. Use the MINI Schematic provided (above) and follow instructions carefully.

    1. Check for continuity between ground and the (K427) PTO Relay Enable circuit at the PCM C2 harness connector.

      Is there continuity between ground and the (K427) PTO Relay Enable circuit?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  16
  14. CHECK THE (K427) PTO RELAY ENABLE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (TCM SECTION) 
    NOTE:

    This Test Step can only be performed on a vehicle with an automatic transmission application.

    NOTE:

    The PTO Relay Enable circuit is divided into two halves. One section is on the 'TCM' side of the PTO/AUX 5 Jumper (K427). The other section is on the 'Aux PDC' side of the Jumper (P819).

    NOTE:

    Some PTO circuits do not follow conventional architecture. Use the MINI Schematic provided (above) and follow instructions carefully.

    1. Disconnect the PTO/AUX 5 Jumper harness connector.
    2. Disconnect the TCM C1 harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance of the (K427) PTO Relay Enable circuit between the PTO/AUX 5 Jumper harness connector and the TCM C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  15

      No 

  15. CHECK THE (K427) PTO RELAY ENABLE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND (TCM SECTION) 
    NOTE:

    This Test Step can only be performed on a vehicle with an automatic transmission application.

    NOTE:

    Some PTO circuits do not follow conventional architecture. Use the MINI Schematic provided (above) and follow instructions carefully.

    1. Check for continuity between ground and the (K427) PTO Relay Enable circuit at the TCM C1 harness connector.

      Is there continuity between ground and the (K427) PTO Relay Enable circuit?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  16
  16. CHECK THE (P819) PTO RELAY ENABLE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (PDC SECTION) 
    NOTE:

    Some PTO circuits do not follow conventional architecture. Use the MINI Schematic provided (above) and follow instructions carefully.

    1. Disconnect the Auxiliary PDC harness connector.
    2. Measure the resistance of the (P819) PTO Relay Enable circuit between the PTO/AUX 5 Jumper harness connector and the Aux PDC harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  17

      No 

  17. CHECK THE (P819) PTO RELAY ENABLE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND (TCM SECTION) 
    NOTE:

    Some PTO circuits do not follow conventional architecture. Use the MINI Schematic provided (above) and follow instructions carefully.

    1. Check for continuity between ground and the (P819) PTO Relay Enable circuit at the Aux PDC harness connector.

      Is there continuity between ground and the (P819) PTO Relay Enable circuit?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  18
  18. CHECK THE (F605) PTO RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    NOTE:

    Some PTO circuits do not follow conventional architecture. Use the MINI Schematic provided (above) and follow instructions carefully.

    1. Measure the resistance of the (F605) PTO Relay Output circuit between the Aux PDC harness connector and the Upfitter connector Aux 2.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  19

      No 

  19. CHECK THE (F605) PTO RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    NOTE:

    Some PTO circuits do not follow conventional architecture. Use the MINI Schematic provided (above) and follow instructions carefully.

    1. Check for continuity between ground and the (F605) PTO Relay Output circuit at the Aux PDC harness connector.

      Is there continuity between ground and the (F605) PTO Relay Output circuit?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Replace the Auxiliary Power Distribution Center (PDC) in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .
  20. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE 
    1. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Using the recorded Freeze Frame and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    10. With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No
