Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2015 RAM 3500 HD and 2015 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. ACTIVE DTC 
    NOTE:

    Diagnose any Misfire DTCs before continuing.

    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With a scan tool, read the DTCs.

      Is the DTC active at this time?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

  2. CHECKING THE MDS SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE MDS IN-LINE HARNESS CONNECTOR AND THE PCM 
    NOTE:

    The DTC must not be active for the actuator test to operate properly, clear all DTC before continuing.

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the MDS in-line harness connector located behind the left side cylinder head.
    3. Using a 12-volt test light, jump from the Ground circuit to the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit in the MDS in-line harness connector (PCM side).
    4. Turn the ignition on.
    5. Using the scan tool, actuate the MDS Solenoid 1.

      Does the 12-volt test light flash on and off?

      Yes 

      • Go To  3

      No 

      • Go To  4
  3. MDS SOLENOID RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Measure the resistance between the Ground circuit and the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit in the MDS in-line harness connector (MDS side).
      NOTE:

      It is important to follow the below temp/resistance values to ensure an accurate reading.

      MDS SOLENOID RESISTANCE
      TEMPERATURE VALUE RESISTANCE - MINIMUM RESISTANCE - MAXIMUM
      -18° C (0° F) 7.22 ohms 8.12 ohms
      0° C (32° F) 7.92 ohms 8.82 ohms
      20° C (68° F) 8.72 ohms 9.62 ohms
      38° C (100° F) 9.42 ohms 10.32 ohms
      66° C (150° F) 10.62 ohms 11.52 ohms
      93° C (200° F) 11.82 ohms 12.72 ohms
      121° C (250° F) 12.82 ohms 13.72 ohms
      149° C (300° F) 14.02 ohms 14.92 ohms

      Is the resistance within an acceptable range?

      Yes 

      • Go To  12

      No 

      • Go To  8
  4. CHECK THE (Z903) GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (PCM SIDE) 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Using a 12-volt test light connected to the 12 volts, probe the (Z903) Ground circuit in the MDS in-line harness connector (PCM side).

      Does the test light illuminate brightly?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

      • Repair the (Z903) Ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. CHECK THE (K451) MDS SOLENOID 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE (PCM SIDE) 
    1. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    2. Turn the ignition on.
    3. Measure the voltage on the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit at the MDS in-line harness connector (PCM side).

      Does the Voltmeter indicate voltage present?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short to battery voltage in the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit between the PCM C2 harness connector and MDS in-line harness connector.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  6
  6. CHECK THE (K451) MDS SOLENOID 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND (PCM SIDE) 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Measure the resistance between ground and the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit in the MDS in-line harness connector (PCM side).

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short to ground in the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit between the PCM harness connector and the MDS in-line harness connector.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  7
  7. CHECK THE (K451) MDS SOLENOID 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE (PCM SIDE) 
    CAUTION:

    Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

    1. Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic).
    2. Measure the resistance of the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit from the MDS in-line harness connector to the GPEC Adaptor.

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Repair the open in the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit between the MDS in-line harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  8. CHECK THE (Z903) GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (MDS SIDE) 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Gain access to the MDS Solenoid. Refer to SOLENOID, MULTIPLE DISPLACEMENT, REMOVAL .
    3. Disconnect the MDS harness connector.
    4. Measure the resistance of the Ground circuit between the MDS in-line harness connector and the MDS 1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  9

      No 

  9. CHECK THE (K451) MDS SOLENOID 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE (MDS SIDE)

    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. Measure the voltage on the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit in the MDS Solenoid 1 harness connector.

      Does the Voltmeter indicate voltage present?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short to battery voltage in the (K451) MDS Solenoid No. 1 Control circuit between the C101 harness connector and the MDS 1 harness connector.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  10
  10. CHECK THE (K451) MDS SOLENOID 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND (MDS SIDE)

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Measure the resistance between ground and the (K451) MDS Solenoid No. 1 Control circuit in the MDS Solenoid 1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short to ground in the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit between the MDS in-line harness connector and the MDS harness connector.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  11
  11. CHECK THE (K451) MDS SOLENOID 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (MDS SIDE) 
    1. Measure the resistance of the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit from the MDS Solenoid 1 harness connector to the MDS in-line harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Repair the open in the (K451) MDS Solenoid 1 Control circuit between the MDS v harness connector and the MDS harness connector.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  12. CHECKING THE MDS IN-LINE CONNECTOR AND GROUND CONNECTION 
    1. Inspect the MDS in-line harness connector.
    2. Make sure the ground terminal and control terminal are fastened securely into the connector and there are no signs of corrosion or damage.
    3. Check wiring to terminal connection. Look for an internal broken wire under the insulation.
    4. Inspect the Ground for a tight, clean connection.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes 

      No
