Diagnostic Test

  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    NOTE:

    Diagnose and repair any EGR Valve Position Sensor or EGR Valve control circuit DTCs before continuing with this test procedure.

    1. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature.
    2. Test drive the vehicle normally with several decel occurrences.
    3. With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.

      Is the DTC active or pending?

      Yes 

      • Go To  3

      No 

      • Go To  2
  2. CHECK THE VEHICLE'S REPAIR HISTORY 
    1. Check the history of the vehicle for previous EGR Valve performance related DTCs within the past 90 days.

      Did the repair history show that the vehicle was in dealership for a EGR Valve performance fault within the past 90 days?

      Yes 

      • Replace the EGR Valve Assembly in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Test complete. Reconnect the harness connectors, and erase the DTC. The EGR Valve may have been carboned/sooted up temporarily. Try cleaning the valve by running Mopar Combustion Chamber cleaner through the engine. Test drive the vehicle and verify the DTC does not return.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  3. CHECK THE EGR VALVE FOR CARBON OR SOOT BUILD UP 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Remove the EGR Valve Assembly.
    3. Visually inspect the EGR Valve stem, disc and passages for signs of damage or excessive carbon build up.

      Does the EGR Valve show signs of excessive carbon build up?

      Yes 

      • Clean and reinstall the EGR Valve Assembly. Test drive the vehicle and verify the DTC does not return.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Replace the EGR Valve Assembly in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
