Diagnosis And Testing - Brake Transmission Shift Interlock
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2015 RAM 3500 HD and 2015 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
When the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) fails to operate as described below, check the shift cable adjustment. Refer to CABLE, SHIFT, ADJUSTMENTS . If the shift cable adjustment is correct, use the appropriate wiring diagrams as a guide to test the circuits and components for an open or shorted circuit and repair or replace as necessary.
For vehicles with an ignition key:
- verify that the key can only be removed in the PARK position.
- when the shift lever is in the PARK position, the ignition key cylinder should rotate freely from OFF to LOCK. When the shifter is in any other gear or neutral position, the ignition key cylinder should not rotate to the LOCK position.
- shifting out of PARK should not be possible when the ignition key cylinder is in the OFF position.
- shifting out of PARK should not be possible while applying normal force to the shifter and the ignition key cylinder is in the RUN or START positions unless the foot brake pedal is depressed.
- shifting out of PARK should not be possible when the ignition key cylinder is in the ACCESSORY or LOCK positions.
- shifting between any gears, NEUTRAL or into PARK may be done without depressing foot brake pedal with ignition switch in RUN or START positions.
For vehicles with keyless ignition:
- shifting out of PARK should not be possible when the ignition is in the OFF position.
- shifting out of PARK should not be possible while applying normal force to the shifter and the ignition is in the RUN or START positions unless the foot brake pedal is depressed.
- shifting out of PARK should not be possible when the ignition is in the ACCESSORY or LOCK positions.
- shifting between any gears, NEUTRAL or into PARK may be done without depressing foot brake pedal with ignition switch in RUN or START positions.
