There are two types of hood ajar switches used on this vehicle. This information covers the stand alone hood ajar switch (1) that is optional equipment on some vehicles. A latch mounted hood ajar switch is standard on all vehicles, but is discussed elsewhere in this service information.

The stand alone switch has a molded plastic switch body (5) with an integral molded connector receptacle (1) on the lower end containing two terminal pins. The switch is connected to the vehicle electrical system through a dedicated take out and connector of the headlamp and dash wire harness. Two integral latches (2) lock the switch into a keyed mounting hole in the switch mounting bracket. The mounting bracket is secured to the upper radiator cross member. The switch plunger (3) extends through a mounting collar (4) and a sleeve-like retainer ring on the upper end of the switch body. The retainer ring has a one time, self-adjustment feature that is activated after the switch is installed by closing the hood. The input of this switch is used exclusively for the start-stop system, which is optional equipment with certain optional engines.

Once a stand alone hood ajar switch is installed it cannot be readjusted or repaired. If the switch is damaged, ineffective or requires readjustment, it must be replaced with a new unit. The hood ajar switch striker is not intended for reuse. If the striker is removed from the hood inner reinforcement for any reason, it must be replaced with a new unit.
