3.0L Diesel

CAUTION:
When supporting or lifting the transmission at the oil pan the weight of the transmission must be distributed evenly on the lifting fixture. Failure to do so could damage the oil pan and transmission.
NOTE:
If the transmission is being reconditioned (clutch/seal replacement) or replaced, it is necessary to perform the TCM Adaptation Procedure using the scan tool. Refer to TCM ADAPTATION - 8HP45/845RE/8HP70 .
NOTE:
Make sure that the transmission dowel pins are seated in engine block and protrude far enough to hold transmission in alignment.
- Install the torque converter. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER, INSTALLATION .
- For 4WD only
, if removed, position the extension housing (2), install the seven bolts (1) and tighten to 27 N.m (20 ft. lbs.).
NOTE:
Hold torque converter in place during transmission installation.
- Position the transmission to the vehicle.
- Install the upper bell housing bolts (1, 2) securing the bell housing to the engine block. Do not tighten at this time.
- Install the LH bell housing bolts (1) and tighten all installed bolts to specification. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS .
- Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction to line up the alignment hole (1) in the flex plate, then start the first bolt.
- Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until converter bolts (1) are accessible. There are three sets of two bolts 120° apart. Install the remaining bolts and tighten to 42 N.m (31 ft. lbs.).
- Connect the transmission cooler lines (1) to the transmission heater.
- Connect the coolant lines (2) to the transmission heater.
- Install the differential pressure switch bracket to transmission bolts and tighten to specification. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the Install the bracket at the rear of the diesel particulate filter to transmission and tighten bolts to specification. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS .
- If equipped, install front differential pinion nose to transmission bracket and tighten bolts to specification. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS .
- If equipped, install the transfer case. For BW44-44 refer to INSTALLATION . For BW44-45 refer to INSTALLATION .
- Position the crossmember, install the bolts (1) to the frame and tighten to 65 N.m (90 ft. lbs.).
- Remove the transmission jack (1).
- Install the right side coolant line bracket and bolt. Tighten bolt to 45 N.m (18 ft. lbs.).
- Install the right side transmission line bracket and bolt (1). Tighten bolt to 45 N.m (18 ft. lbs.).
- Install the left side coolant line bracket and position the bolt (2) through the manual park release lever bracket.
- Position the manual park release cable bracket/cable, install the bolts (2) and tighten to 20 N.m (15 ft. lbs.).
- Connect the parking pawl release cable (1) to the lever (2).
- Install the rear propeller shaft (RWD).
- Install the starter. Refer to STARTER, INSTALLATION .
- Install the transfer case and transmission vent hose.
- Route all wire harness for the transmission and transfer case and clip into place.
- Connect the adapter plug connector (1) to the transmission.
- Turn the locking mechanism lock (1) of the adapter plug connector (2) clockwise to secure.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- If coolant was drained or lost, perform standard procedure coolant fill. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Perform the STANDARD PROCEDURE - TRANSMISSION FILL AFTER SERVICE. Refer to FLUID AND FILTER, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
