Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2013 Dodge Avenger and 2013 Chrysler 200. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. ACTIVE DTC 
    1. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. If the engine will not start, crank the engine for several seconds.
      WARNING:

      When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    2. With the scan tool, select View DTCs.

      Is the status Active for this DTC?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

  2. CHECK THE (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT VOLTAGE

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Measure the voltage of the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit in the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor harness connector.

      Is the voltage between 4.8 and 5.2 volts?

      Yes 

      • Go To  3

      No 

      • Go To  7
  3. CHECK THE (K44) CMP 1/1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT VOLTAGE

    1. Measure the voltage of the (K44) CMP 1/1 Signal circuit in the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor harness connector.

      Is the voltage between 4.8 and 5.2 volts?

      Yes 

      • Go To  4

      No 

      • Go To  11
  4. CHECK THE (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Using a 12-volt test light connected to 12 volts, check the (K900) Sensor Ground in the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor harness connector.
      NOTE:

      The test light should be illuminated and bright. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery.

      Is the test light illuminated and bright?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

      • Go To  15
  5. CHECK FOR THE (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K44) CMP 1/1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT

    1. Measure the resistance between the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K44) CMP 1/1 Signal circuit in the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  6

      No 

      • Repair the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to the (K44) CMP 1/1 Signal circuit.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  6. CHECK THE CAMSHAFT 1/1 POSITION SENSOR FOR AN IRREGULAR SIGNAL

    1. Connect the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor connector.
    2. Using a lab scope and the back probing tool (special tool #6801, Terminal Probe), back probe the (K44) CMP 1/1 Signal circuit in the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Wiggle the related wire harness and lightly tap on the Camshaft 1/2 Position Sensor while monitoring the lab scope screen.
    5. Start the engine.
    6. Monitor the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor signal on the lab scope screen.

      Were any Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor signals irregular or missing?

      Yes 

      • Go To 16

      No 

      • Go To 17
  7. CHECK THE (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Measure the voltage of the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit in the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor harness connector.

      Is there any voltage present?

      Yes 

      • Repair the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to voltage.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

      No 

      • Go To 8
  8. (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Measure the resistance between ground and the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit in the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  9

      No 

      • Repair the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  9. CHECK FOR THE (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT

    1. Measure the resistance between the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit in the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  10

      No 

      • Repair the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  10. CHECK THE (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    CAUTION:

    Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

    1. Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic).
    2. Measure the resistance of the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit between the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor harness connector and the GPEC Adaptor.

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  17

      No 

      • Repair the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  11. CHECK THE (K44) CMP 1/1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Measure the voltage of the (K44) CMP 1/1 Signal circuit in the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor harness connector.

      Is there any voltage present?

      Yes 

      • Repair the (K44) CMP 1/1 Signal circuit for a short to voltage.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

      No 

      • Go To  12
  12. CHECK THE (K44) CMP 1/1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Measure the resistance between ground and the (K44) CMP 1/1 Signal circuit in the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  13

      No 

      • Repair the (K44) CMP 1/1 Signal circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  13. CHECK FOR THE (K44) CMP 1/1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT

    1. Measure the resistance between the (K44) CMP 1/1 Signal circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit in the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  14

      No 

      • Repair the (K44) CMP 1/1 Signal circuit for a short to the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  14. CHECK THE (K44) CMP 1/1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    CAUTION:

    Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

    1. Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic).
    2. Measure the resistance of the (K44) CMP 1/1 Signal circuit between the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor harness connector and the GPEC Adaptor.

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  17

      No 

      • Repair the (K44) CMP 1/1 Signal circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  15. CHECK THE (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
      CAUTION:

      Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

    3. Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic).
    4. Measure the resistance of the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit between the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor harness connector and the GPEC Adaptor.

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To 17

      No 

      • Repair the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  16. CAMSHAFT 1/1 POSITION SENSOR 
    1. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
    2. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
    3. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
    4. Inspect the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor for conditions such as loose mounting screws, damage, or cracks.
    5. If no other problems are found, remove the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor.
    6. Inspect the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor and mounting area for any condition that would result in an incorrect signal, such as damage, foreign material, or excessive movement.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes 

      • Repair as necessary.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

      No 

      • Replace the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  17. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) 
    1. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Camshaft 1/1 Position Sensor and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
    2. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
    3. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
    4. Monitor the scan tool data relative to this circuit and wiggle test the wiring and connectors.
    5. Look for the data to change or for the DTC to reset during the wiggle test.
    6. Perform any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes 

      • Repair as necessary.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

      No 

      • Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
