Diagnostic Test

  1. ACTIVE DTC 
    1. Turn the ignition on, engine not running.
    2. With the scan tool, record all Freeze frame data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for 75 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on, engine not running.
    6. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did DTC P0686 reset?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

  2. SCR RELAY 1 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Use a known good relay in place of the SCR Relay 1.
    3. Turn the ignition on, engine not running.
    4. With the scan tool, record all Freeze frame data.
    5. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    6. Start and run the engine until it reaches operating temperature.
    7. Using the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did DTC P0686 reset?

      Yes 

      • Go To  3

      No 

      • Repair Complete.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  3. CHECK THE (K401) SCR RELAY 1 12-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    3. Disconnect the SCR Relay 1.
      NOTE:

      Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.

    4. Measure the resistance of the (K401) SCR Relay 1 12-Volt Supply circuit between pin 82 of the PCM C2 harness connector and the SCR Relay 1.

      Is the resistance above 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Repair the (K401) SCR Relay 1 12-Volt Supply circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE (K401) SCR RELAY 1 12-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Measure the resistance between ground and the (K401) SCR Relay 1 12-Volt Supply circuit at pin 82 of the PCM C2 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Repair the (K401) SCR Relay 1 12-Volt Supply circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

      No 

      • Go To  5
  5. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE 
    1. Reconnect the SCR Relay 1.
    2. Turn the ignition on, engine not running.
    3. Using a test light connected to ground, probe the (K401) SCR Relay 1 12-Volt Supply circuit at pin 82 of the PCM C2 harness connector.

      Did the test light illuminate as bright as connecting to B+ of the Battery?

      Yes 

      • Replace the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

      No 

      • Check relay operation at the Power Distribution Center.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
