Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2013 RAM 3500 HD and 2013 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. ACTIVE DTC
    NOTE:

If there are any Starter Relay Control circuit DTCs present in the PCM or BCM, diagnose and repair those DTCs before continuing with this test procedure.

    1. Perform several key starts of the engine.
    2. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Is the DTC active?

      Yes

      • Go To  2

      No

  2. CHECK BATTERY
    1. Using the approved Battery tester, check the Battery state of charge.

Did the Battery pass the load test?

      Yes

      • Go To  3

      No

      • Replace the Battery and retest.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  3. CHECK THE (T760) IN-RUSH RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT VOLTAGE
    1. Start the engine and allow it to idle.
      WARNING:

When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    2. Disconnect the ICR Relay C1 harness connector.
    3. Measure the voltage of the (T760) In-Rush Relay Control circuit at the ICR Relay C1 harness connector.

      Is there any voltage present?

      Yes

      • Go To  4

      No

      • Go To  5.
  4. CHECK THE (T760) IN-RUSH RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO ANOTHER VOLTAGE SUPPLY
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PDC C3 harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance between the (T760) In-Rush Relay Control circuit and all other circuits at the PDC C3 harness connector.

Is the resistance above 10k Ohms between the (T760) In-Rush Relay Control circuit and all other circuits?

      Yes

      • Replace the PDC in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

      No

      • Repair the short between the (T760) In-Rush Relay Control circuit and the circuit that measured below 10k Ohms.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  5. CHECK THE IN-RUSH CURRENT RELAY
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Remove the (A11) Fused Battery Cable from the In-Rush Current Relay.
    3. Remove the (A8) Battery Starter Feed Cable from the In-Rush Current Relay.
      NOTE:

These are live Battery Feeds. Be careful to insulate and/or isolate the cable so that it cannot make contact with any engine ground.

    4. Measure the resistance across the terminals of the In-Rush Current Relay.
      NOTE:

The relay is normally closed when not energized and therefore not passing through the resistor inside the relay.

Is the resistance below 2.0 Ohms?

      Yes

      • The In-Rush Current Relay is not stuck closed at this time. This may be an intermittent condition. Try energizing and de-energizing the relay several times while testing continuity across the relay to check for an intermittent stuck condition.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

      No

      • Replace the In-Rush Current Relay in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
