Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2013 RAM 2500 HD and 2012 RAM Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. ACTIVE DTC
    NOTE:

If there are any ASD/Main Relay or system voltage DTCs present, diagnose those DTCs before proceeding with this test procedure.

    1. Ignition on, engine not running.
    2. With the scan tool, select View DTCs. Copy DTC and Freeze Frame information and clear DTCs.
      NOTE:

Active or pending DTCs may not allow A/C Clutch actuation, make sure all DTCs are cleared before proceeding with this test procedure.

    3. With the scan tool, actuate the A/C Compressor.
    4. Monitor the scan tool for at least two minutes.
    5. With the scan tool, select View DTCs.

Is the status Active for this DTC?

      Yes

      • Go To  2

      No

  2. CHECK THE (C13) A/C CLUTCH RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PDC C3 harness connector.
    3. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
      CAUTION:

Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

    4. Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic).
    5. Measure the resistance between ground and the (C13) A/C Clutch Relay Control circuit at the GPEC Adaptor.

Is the resistance below 10k Ohms?

      Yes

      • Repair the (C13) A/C Clutch Relay Control circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

      No

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE (C13) A/C CLUTCH CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
    1. Measure the resistance of the (C13) A/C Clutch Control circuit between GPEC Adaptor and the PDC C3 harness connector.

Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes

      • Go To  4

      No

      • Repair the (C13) A/C Clutch Control circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  4. POWER DISTRIBUTION CENTER (PDC)
    1. Reconnect the PDC C3 harness connector.
    2. Reconnect the PCM C1 harness connector with the GPEC Adaptor connected in line.
    3. Remove the Run/Start Relay from the PDC.
      NOTE:

The Run/Start Relay feeds the coils side of the A/C Clutch Relay.

    4. Connect a jumper between terminal 30 and terminal 87 of the connector in the PDC for the Run/Start Relay.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Measure the voltage at the (C13) A/C Clutch Control circuit at the GPEC Adaptor.

Is the voltage equal to battery voltage?

      Yes

      • Go To  5

      No

      • Replace the Power Distribution Center in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  5. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
    1. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Power Distribution Center and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
    2. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires.
    3. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the related connectors.
    4. Perform any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes

      • Repair as necessary.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

      No

      • Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
