Variable Geometry Mechanism Checks - 6.7L
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2013 RAM 3500 HD and 2013 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Remove turbocharger electronic actuator. Refer to ACTUATOR, TURBOCHARGER, REMOVAL, 6.7L .
- Inspect turbocharger sector gear (3) and bearing housing (1) surface for damage. Replace turbocharger if damaged.NOTE:
Only moderate force should be required to rotate sector gear (3). Do not use tools of any kind to force sector gear to move.
- Rotate sector gear (3) clockwise and counterclockwise. Movement should be smooth, without binding and require only moderate force. If the turbocharger sector gear (3) binds or does not move with moderate force, replace turbocharger.
NOTE:
Use the sector gear travel gauge, Part Number 4919281 that comes with new actuator, to be sure the sector gear moves through its operating range.
- Install the sector gear travel gauge (2) by carefully bending the gauge and slide the thin section under the sector gear. If necessary, pull the sector gear out by hand to allow more clearance for the gauge. Verify that the three alignment bosses are fully engaged in the bearing housing.
- Rotate the sector gear counterclockwise towards the turbocharger compressor cover. The edge of the sector gear must be in the green acceptance zone of the gauge.
- Rotate sector gear (1) clockwise toward the turbocharger turbine housing. The edge of the sector gear must be in the green acceptance zone of the gauge.
- If the sector gear does not go through its entire range of motion, or if the sector gear is seized, the entire turbocharger assembly must be replaced.
- Install the turbocharger actuator. Refer to ACTUATOR, TURBOCHARGER, INSTALLATION, 6.7L .
